Hits by Elvis, Kylie Minogue and Human League were given a twist at the weekend as the Norwich Ukulele Society wowed shoppers to raise hundreds of pounds for a cancer-struck mum.

About 15 players strummed their instruments for more than two hours to the delight of watching crowds who generously donated 280.50 for a good cause.

The money will be given to Natalie Cox, a North Walsham mum who flew out to America for treatment a month ago as she fights a rare cancer which UK doctors have told her is incurable.

The mother-of-one has no idea how long she, husband David Quantrill and son Dillon, will have to stay there and the bills are quickly mounting.

Friend and founder of the ukulele band Gemma Cullingford organised Saturday's fundraiser in the hope of raising a little cash for the family.

She said: 'It went really, really well. Better than we could have expected. I thought we might only raise 20 or so - so this is unbelievable really.'

The buskers sat beside notices explaining Natalie's plight and asking shoppers to give generously as they played tunes including Human League's Don't You Want Me and David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World.

Ms Cullingford said: 'Kylie went down really well and we played You Are My Sunshine a few times - which was perfect for the weather.'

The ukulele teacher said she hoped the money would help a little towards rent for the family's accommodation in America or their petrol bills as they travel to and from hospitals in San Diego and Mexico.

Another fundraiser in aid of Team Natalie is due to take place at Norwich Arts Centre on July 3. Factory Floor, featuring Nikki Colk, a former bandmate of Natalie's husband, will play alongside Bearsuit, ddd and Magoo, as part of the Twee Off party, which will also include sets from DJs and a BBQ.
