A number of events were held in and around Norwich yesterday to mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The worldwide celebration pays homage to the lives of those lost to transphobia. According to recent research, a trans person is murdered every 27 hours.

While most attacks happen in the Americas, activists say Britain is not a safe place for a trans person to live.

To raise awareness of this people in Norwich came together at a number of events around the city to commemorate the lives lost within the trans community.

Writer Katy Jon Went spoke at the events at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and a gathering outside The Forum.

Over 130 people attended the vigils in total, including the Lord Mayor of Norwich.

Evie Thomas of UEA, Sarah Corke and Poppy Rose also spoke at the vigils and read poetry.

A trans flag was surrounded by candles lit by the participants in memory of the victims.

Katy said she was 'most impressed by the number of allies that attended, showing that society and Norwich in particular is open-minded and accepting in the main.'

'[This showed that people] support the rights, lives and wellbeing of trans and gender non-conforming people, despite media articles to the contrary', she added.
