Two students from Norwich are taking part in a 1,000 mile endurance race around the UK.

Richard McLellan and Alex Yorke are representing Cambridge University in the Varsity Triple Crown Challenge for Combat Stress and ABF The Soldiers' Charity.

The 10 day challenge is a 1,000 mile endurance cycle race that sees two teams representing Oxford and Cambridge University Officer Training Corps travel around Britain.

The Cambridge team is made up of army postgraduate and undergraduate officer cadets from Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia – with two riders from Norwich taking part.

Richard McLellan, 22, is a UEA postgraduate in Environmental Sciences.

He is currently studying for an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management and has been awarded the coveted Red Beret by the Parachute Regiment while at Cambridge UOTC.

Alex Yorke, 20, is a computer science undergraduate at the UEA.

In the past he has completed three half-marathons, a triathlon and has gone sky-diving and base-jumping.

Other UEA present and past students competing for the Cambridge team are 23-year-old team captain Trevor Aslan, Tom Betts, 24, Hannah McInroy-Naylor, 20, Katie Rellis, 19, Zoe Rutterford, 27, and Michael Cannon, 20.

The team, who is backed by a seven-strong support team, are cycling from London to Edinburgh, on to Cardiff and back to London.

It is race against the clock with the Cambridge team starting last Monday and the Oxford team starting 24 hours later.

They are expected to arrive back in London by Thursday, with the team with the fastest time awarded the Triple Crown Challenge Trophy.

Yesterday the Cambridge team arrived in Cardiff.

Before they started, Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow met the teams at Horse Guards Parade in London to wish them luck. He said: 'As a keen cyclist myself I have nothing but admiration for these young men and women intending to race 1,000 miles over 10 days.'

They are hoping to raise 50,000 for Combat Stress and ABF The Soldiers' Charity through their efforts.

Combat Street specialises in the care of Veterans' mental health, while ABF The Soldiers' Charity helps soldiers, veterans and their families in times of need.
