Students from Norwich are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for children in Tanzania by taking on one of its biggest challenges - making it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The three students are in their first year at the University of East Anglia and are part of the Raising and Giving Club (RAG).

They are planning to climb Africa’s highest peak in July this year and will spend six days doing the 5,895 metre (19,340 feet) high journey to help the organisation Childreach International.

Sam Watts, aged 19, is currently studying environmental science and said: “I just can’t wait to get up to the top and get a photo of the view as the sun rises.”

Sam is being joined by Jodie Finch, aged 18, and Louis Martin, also aged 18. Both are studying psychology.

Jodie said: “We were told when we first started university to grab every opportunity we were given, so that’s what we’re doing.”

Although some of the money raised will be used to cover the cost of the trip, more than half of the money will be given directly to the charity.

It works in partnership with local communities in the developing world to help improve children’s access to healthcare and education, and promote child rights and protection.

Louis said: “We will get to meet the people we will be helping when we are out there. We have already seen examples of where the money goes and it really inspires you.” The students will need to raise at least £2,440 each as a minimum donation.
