A footballing star and a news presenter joined in a special fundraising event for a department of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Norwich City’s Steve Morison and Anglia presenter Becky Jago went to Weston Park Golf Club, in Weston Longville, for the event that included a fashion show and head shaving for the oncology and haematology department.

The prolific striker donated a signed Norwich City shirt, while the presenter compered the evening.

The evening was organised by Annie Bush, of Wendling, near Dereham, after she learnt of the Colney Centre’s aim to raise £15,000 for a more relaxing waiting area for patients, including paintings, furniture refurbishment and DVD players.

Mrs Bush, who runs Get Smart in Fakenham, joined with her friends Jackie Gunns, of Easton, April Spalding, of Wymondham, and Adele Whitburn, of Wendling, to help raise money for the centre under the name The Sunshine Ladies Who Care.

Mrs Bush has experience of the centre after accompanying a friend for treatment in the past.

She said: “I’ve never seen so many people in a waiting room. They need money to do research but also need money to make life more bearable when they are having this treatment.”

The evening included a fashion show from Get Smart, which included five young women who have been having cancer treatment, the headshaving of Jackie Gunns and Ian Williams, and the raffle of Steve Morison’s shirt.

Mrs Bush said: “This event raised an overwhelming £7,000, far exceeding our expectations. It was just a wonderful evening. I’d just like to thank everyone that helped make it possible.”
