A Norwich target shooting club that has produced international champions is appealing for assistance in finding new premises after Norfolk County Council terminated the lease for a building used by the group.
Norwich City Target Club chairman George Darling said the club had been based at the Wensum Lodge in Norwich since 1982 and had produced county, national and Commonwealth champions.
However, the club was served with an eviction notice last month by the county council giving it until the end of April to find new premises.
Mr Darling said they were now desperately seeking a new building in which to train.
He said; “We need an indoor area of about 15 metres long by about 20 metres wide that would give us the range with shooting lanes.
“We’d also need a club room and toilets.”
He said although a small club with just 20 active members, they could afford to pay a nominal fee but would find it difficult to pay commercial rental prices.
Mr Darling said the club had been successful at producing world class shooters.
His daughter Samantha, 19, has represented Great Britain at the World Indoor Shooting Championships while Olivia Hill, 16, has made the Scout National Squad, the Norfolk County Air Rifle team and has been accepted into the Great Britain Rifle Talent Squad.
“We have some very promising young shooters and their future in the sport is put in jeopardy without a place to train,” said Mr Darling.
“Ideally we need to be able to set up a permanent range but if we could get a multi use space that would also help.”
A Norfolk County Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the lease is being terminated at the end of April 2018 as the premises are no longer suitable to be used as a rifle range on health and safety grounds.
“We have had a look at other Norfolk County Council premises across Norwich to see whether we could offer an alternative but unfortunately there is nothing suitable in our portfolio.
“We hope Norwich City Target Club is able to find alternative premises and that the club understands our decision to end the lease.”
