Could you be a sock-sliding record-breaker?

To support Sport Relief, Sainsbury's in Norwich is challenging customers to master the humble art of sock-sliding on Thursday – and set a new world record.

There are prizes up for grabs for the best, with the longest slider winning a �100 Sainsbury's gift card to spend in-store or online and the chance to write their name into the record books.

Everyone who takes part in the challenge – held at the Longwater Lane store on Thursday between 10am and noon – will also be entered in a prize draw to win a �500 gift card.

Sock sliders will have three attempts to record the longest continuous slide along a specially designed floor ruler in a bid to make history.

The challenge is open to anyone who purchases a pair of Sport Relief socks, available at Sainsbury's and sportrelief.com. The Fairtrade cotton socks costs �2.50, with at least �1.25 from each pair going directly to the charity.

The national campaign has been launched by Dancing on Ice judge and Pineapple Dance Studios star Louie Spence, who decided to re-create the most famous scene from Tom Cruise film Risky Business in his own style.

He said: 'Pull on a fabulous pair of Sport Relief socks and not only will you be supporting a great cause and raising money for Sport Relief, you can slide your way to the title of sock sliding champion.'

Jat Sahota, head of sponsorship for Sainsbury's, added: 'Sport Relief is all about fun ways to raise money for so many worthy causes, both in the UK and further afield. I wish all sock sliders the best of luck for setting a new world record.'

Voluntary groups, social enterprises and charities in the Norwich City Council local authority area have the chance to benefit from Community Cash this year.

The Evening News, working with the Norfolk Community Foundation and Sport Relief, has another �50,000 to give away in grants of up to �1,000 in 2012.
