Commuters faced a busy rush-hour this morning after a road in south Norwich was closed due to a burst water main.

Lakenham Road was shut after a 2ft main burst flooding the area, near the Hewett School in Lakenham.

Anglian Water was called to the scene at about 6.30am and is now assessing the damage.

The road has since reopened but workmen are still on site.

A spokeswoman said the likely cause of the burst main was ground movements caused by the change in the weather.

She said: “There's a lot of muck and sand that has been picked up by the water and a JCB is coming to scrape all that away. The police said it's too dangerous for cars to drive down Lakenham Road at the moment. But hopefully once the road has been scraped it can reopen, and that won't be too long.”

There were reports that some of the flood water was close to homes in Hall Road, but Anglian Water said no properties had been flooded.”
