A city centre pub and restaurant has undergone another name change just when regulars were getting used to the new moniker introduced five months ago.

Customers with long memories will remember the pub opposite the Bell Hotel in Farmers' Avenue as Owens Cafe Bar, before it became Blind Pig and then Over de Flames when Sudeep De took it over in September last year.

It has now been renamed Basement in a bid to attract a different clientele.

Mr De said: 'I am hoping to attract more students and nicer people. We have just had a drinks promotion selling cheaper beer and we attracted the wrong kind of people. They were always shouting and screaming and making a lot of noise.'

The new incarnation of the pub will continue to do food but with a changed menu.

As reported, the pub attracted a lot of attention when it introduced a challenge to customers to take home 200 in cash if they could eat a burger weighing three kilos with a 30cm diameter in two hours. The only drawback was that you had to pay 30 for the burger if you failed.

Evening News' reporter David Bale took up the challenge but failed and Mr De said 25 people had now attempted to eat the burger without success.

As reported, Mr De opened the pub after it had been closed for about a year, since failing to take off as the Blind Pig pub, which took its name from 1920s and 30s America.

The Evening News has been urging people to support their local pubs to help save them from closure.
