A policeman was injured after he was forced to jump out of the way of a car driven by a man officers wanted to speak to.

PC Adam Edge jumped clear of the car being driven by 25-year-old Ali Jabali as it reversed in the driveway of his Norwich home.

The officer then smashed the window of the car with his baton and eventually got Jabali to stop by grabbing the ignition key.

Norwich Crown Court heard yesterday that PC Edge suffered cuts and a minor injury to his arm as a result.

Jabali, of Birkbeck Road, Norwich, who had an Arabic interpreter with him in court, admitted dangerous driving on September 13 last year.

As well as ordering Jabali to pay PC Edge £100 compensation for his injuries, Judge Simon Barham imposed a 12-month community order, along with 140 hours unpaid work.

He also imposed a 12-month driving ban and ordered Jabali to take an extended test before getting back behind the wheel.

He told Jabali: “You reversed the car when the police officer was at the rear.”

He said that the officer could only get him to stop by taking his ignition key from the vehicle and added: “The officer suffered minor cuts to his arm trying to stop you.”

Guy Ayers, for Jabali, said that he did not speak very much English and had panicked when police had tried to speak to him.

He added that Jabali's car was not a high-powered vehicle and he had been driving at a slow speed when the incident happened.
