Archant 2012

Dozens of people joined Norwich's Lord Mayor as they shared their memories of street processions and carnivals across the county.

Norwich and Norfolk Community Arts (Norca) and the UK Centre for Carnival Arts (UKCCA) have joined forces to create the country’s first online carnival archive.

As part of the project, funded by a £642,500 award from Heritage Lottery Fund, a roadshow was held at the Forum on Saturday.

It was the first of four roadshows planned as part of the 18-month project.

The event saw members of the public share their photos, drawings, films, posters, music and stories. Jenny Lay, the Lord Mayor of Norwich, was also there to talk about her experiences of the Lord Mayor’s Procession.

Carnival archive co-ordinator Cathie Davies said: “We were thrilled with people’s responses. Carnivals touch people in all sorts of ways and sometimes they don’t even realise it.

“With carnival, people come together from all walks of life and make it happen. From making costumes to fundraising, being on the float in the procession to breaking down the float afterwards, it’s a real community event which is brilliant.”

If you would like to contribute to the archive or volunteer for the project, call Norca on 01603 760529 or email carnivalarchive@norcaarts.co.uk.
