People from Norwich were given the chance to carry a piece of sporting history through the city as part of a bid to raise money for a charity for bereaved parents.

Former Hellesdon High School pupil Karen Murray-Tye ran with the Olympic torch from Ness Point in Lowestoft, when it passed through Suffolk earlier this month, after being selected as a torch bearer because of the work her charity does.

Hana's Gift was set up in memory of her daughter, who was stillborn in 2006, and helps to fund memorials so parents who have suffered similar tragedies can remember their children.

Mrs Murray-Tye, from Aylsham, organised a sponsored walk in aid of the charity in Norwich on Saturday, which gave people the chance to carry the torch and have their picture taken with it.

More than 30 people took part in the walk, which started at the Woolpack Inn pub and went along the River Wensum, before returning to the pub based in Golden Ball Street. The walk helped to raise more than 1,000.

Mrs Murray-Tye said: 'It was absolutely brilliant. We didn't expect to have raised quite that much so it was a really nice surprise when we added it all up.'

The mother-of-two, who was honoured to be a torchbearer, said the children who took part in the walk were 'really excited' to be given the chance to hold the torch.
