Homeless people, budding artists, community centres and a city park are just some of the projects which will benefit from a cash injection.

As reported in the Evening News, there were 72 lucky community groups in Norwich which managed to bag a slice of 62,500.

Grants of up to 1,000 were made available for the first time through Sport Relief's Community Cash Fund.

Sport Relief, a fundraising initiative of Comic Relief, teamed up with the Evening News and the Norfolk Community Foundation to discover where in the city the money was needed most.

More than 100 groups applied for the grants and a panel of judges, including the Evening News editor Tim Williams, whittled the entries down.

While many of the winning groups, as highlighted in the Evening News over the last couple of days, include sports clubs and groups involving youngsters, there are many which help a wide range of people.

Today, we take a look at some of the other groups which have bagged the money.

Drawing Buddies

A new art class for older people is set to be launched.

Drawing Buddies will be a new group for over 55s to develop their artistic skills, work with local arts students and other practitioners, and present their work to the public.

At the moment, there are already 14 members and they are looking to boost their numbers to 20.

The group, which meet at the Phoenix Centre in Mile Cross on Thursday mornings, will put the 500 grant won from the Sport Relief Community Cash Fund towards artistic materials and running costs.

Eddie Oxland, chairman of the committee, said: 'We are a group of people that came together for a drawing class once a week but we were told a couple of months ago that they were going to close.

'It was suggested that we should get together and form a committee and run the group ourselves so we did. We are gobsmacked to discover that we will get 500.

'The people involved have met a lot of people and made a lot of friends through the group. It's made a difference to their social life and well being.'

King's Centre Community Initiative

Homeless people will be able to continue to enjoy a free meal and laundry facilities.

The King's Centre in King Street, Norwich, runs a project on Sunday afternoons, helping to feed up to 60 homeless people and rough sleepers.

The scheme, which was set up in 2000 and gained charity status 18 months ago, will use the 1,000 grant from Sport Relief towards its operational costs.

Malcolm Jackson, fundraiser coordinator, said it was 'wonderful' news that they had won the money. He said: 'It's come quite out of the blue and we are very grateful.

'The YMCA and Salvation Army do not provide for the homeless on a Sunday so we have tried to fill that gap.

'We have about 50 homeless people turn up every week and we provide them with a meal and they tend to stay for the rest of the afternoon and use the laundry facilities.'

Friends of Sewell Park

A cash injection will help an annual community fun day go ahead.

For the past three years, the Friends of Sewell Park have organised a themed family event at the St Clements Hill park.

This year, a Medieval theme is planned and the 990 Sport Relief grant will help cover some of the costs.

Any money raised on the day will go towards the sensory garden at the top of the park. The event will be held on Sunday, June 20.

Julie Brociek-Coulton, a city councillor for Sewell Ward who helps run the event, said: 'We are so pleased to have received one of the grants. We have so many people in the community who care and have great projects to promote.

'This grant will allow us to continue to promote how important Sewell Park is and how dedicated the volunteers are in our ward.'
