A pensioner is seeking compensation after she broke her glasses and was left unable to carry out daily tasks when she tripped over a raised manhole cover.

Linda Green, 64, of Ipswich Road, Newton Flotman, fell to the ground, breaking her glasses, while going to the post office in Vauxhall Street, Norwich.

She cut her face, injured her wrist and bruised her leg - leaving her in a lot of pain and unable to cook or do her grocery shopping.

Mrs Green, who was with her husband Graham at the time of the fall, said she was trying to claim compensation for the 300 broken glasses.

She said: 'I was in a lot of pain and am still in a lot of pain. My wrist isn't broken but I'm in a lot of pain with it and can't do the cooking, food shopping or carry anything.

'There was so much blood that came out of my nose. I've been to a solicitor but they said they cannot do anything. I've got pictures of my injuries and the manhole cover - what more evidence do they want?'

The fall happened on Saturday, May 1 on the path near the Vauxhall Street shops. Paramedics helped Mrs Green at the scene and she was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Since the incident, highway officials have been out to the manhole cover and put tarmac around it to make it safer.

A City Hall spokesman said: 'We are currently investigating a claim for compensation, so we are not able to discuss this at this time. We follow an established procedure for investigating insurance claims and do not comment on individual cases.'

According to a leaflet available from Norfolk County Council - 'Your route to understanding highway claims' - a claimant must show that the council failed to maintain the road appropriately, this was the cause of the incident and that they have suffered a loss as a result.
