A Norwich MP has backed calls for an urgent inquiry into why the man accused of the brutal killing of Jennifer Mills-Westley was released from a mental health hospital in the UK before the murder.

Former Norfolk County Council road safety officer Mrs Mills-Westley, who lived in Hellesdon before retiring to live in Tenerife, was viciously stabbed and decapitated in an attack at a shop in Los Cristianos on Friday.

Deyan Deyanov, 28, who was arrested on suspicion of her murder, appeared in court on Sunday and was remanded to the prison Tenerife II. He is currently said to be in the psychiatric unit of the prison.

But it has since emerged that Deyanov was sectioned during a visit to see relatives in the UK last summer - and admitted to the Ablett Psychiatric Unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital, North Wales.

His behaviour there was constantly monitored, but he was allowed to leave in October last year before he later headed for Tenerife where the horrific crime was committed.

Labour MP Steve McCabe said: 'There must be an urgent inquiry to find how someone in psychiatric care can be released, travel abroad and carry out such a crime.'

That call for answers has today been backed by Norwich North MP Chloe Smith. She said: 'Speaking as the MP for where Mrs Mills-Westley used to live, obviously everyone in Hellesdon and the UK wants to know how this tragedy happened and I would support calls for an inquiry.

'This has been a shocking, horrific case and my thoughts are with the family and friends of Mrs Mills-Westley. 'I give my most sincere condolences to all of the family and friends and hope that they can find a swift conclusion. If there is any assistance at all I can give as a local MP I will be the first to do so.'

The Hellesdon community, where the grandmother-of-five used to live, has been rocked by the tragedy with even those that did not know Mrs Mills-Westley personally in a state of shock.

Those feelings prompted Enid Jones-Blackett, former curate of the Hellesdon churches, to say prayers for the community and for the family of Mrs Mills-Westley at a holy communion service at St Mary's Church, Low Road, Hellesdon on Wednesday.

In the days since Mrs Mills-Wetley's tragic death, former colleagues and friends, including those living in Saracen Road, where she used to live in Hellesdon, have paid tribute to the 60-year-old.

Mrs Mills-Westley's family, including daughter Sarah Mears, from Newton St Faith and other daughter Samantha, have paid tribute to the 'generous support' they have received following the brutal events.
