Two instructors and four friends from the South Eastern School of Martial Arts in Drayton completed the 24-hour Three Peaks Challenge to raise nearly 600 for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Karate and kickboxing instructor Wayne Baker, 40, and kung fu instructor Colin Browne, 34, climbed Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales, in a total of 23 hours and 41 minutes.

They were joined by four friends – Simon Bryant, Joel Clack, Alex Baker and David Tooley – in completing the challenge.

They cut it fine though as the challenge started with Ben Nevis at 4pm and they were back in their minibus by 9pm ready to travel to Scafell Pike in Cumbria.

The group then started their trek to the summit of Scafell Pike at 3.20am the next morning, with head torches needed on the first part of the climb to see their way as sunrise was not untill 5am.

They were told that Snowdon was the easiest to climb out of the three mountains, but after climbing two mountains just before it, their legs were tired and the clock was ticking to complete the challenge in 24 hours.

The last climb started at just after midday the next day, which left less than four hours to climb and descend Snowdon. After taking two hours and 15 minutes on the climb, they then jogged the flat parts of the descent to make it in time and were greeted by cheers from minibus drivers, and wives, Sue Baker and Lucy Browne at 3.41pm.

Wayne and Colin chose to support the N&N's renal unit as Wayne lost his step-daughter Danielle Weightman to renal failure at the age of 26, and recently his father has had renal problems and dialysis. Wayne said he was very pleased with completing the challenge but more pleased that he was able to give back, if only a little, to those that gave a lot to helping his family through their difficult times.

He said: 'It was a really enjoyable experience and I would like to try it again – maybe I'd have a go at breaking the record which I think is 22 hours something. And I'm really happy with the amount of money we raised.'
