A Cringleford businessman has raised thousands of pounds to help children with life-limiting conditions after fulfilling a long-standing ambition to tackle a gruelling walk.

Nigel Hopwood, 49, who is a partner at Hymans Robertson LLP in London, undertook the 177-mile Offa’s Dyke path in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). The route between Prestatyn in north Wales and Chepstow in south Wales follows the great earthwork between England and Wales, passing through no less than eight different counties and crossing the border between England and Wales more than 20 times.

The trail passes through the Brecon Beacons National Park and links no less than three areas of outstanding natural beauty – the Wye Valley, the Shropshire Hills and the Clwydian Hills.

Mr Hopwood started the challenge on May 17 and walked the route solo, stopping at various bed and breakfasts along the way. He completed the walk in 13 days and quadrupled his fundraising target, raising £2,047.

He said: “The fundraising for EACH was a constant motivator and encouragement, and when the going got tough, it sort of justified all the donations.”
