A competition to name a special charity beer, which will be available at the Norwich City of Ale festival, has been won by a city housewife, who suggested 'Tidal Gold'.

Hindringham-based Norfolk Brewhouse will be producing the specially-brewed beer and has pledged to donate 20p per pint to our sister paper, the EDP's Flood Appeal to help communities affected by last December's tidal surge. The beer will be a five per cent gold IPA and will contain 10kg of hops.

Marion Turner, from Fountains Road, who suggested 'Tidal Gold' for the name, which beat about 40 other entrants, will receive a demi-pin of the ale and a pair of VIP tickets to the launch party.

She said: 'I came up with the name because it had to be something to do with last year's tidal surge.

'My sister's got a caravan at Walcott, and a lot of her neighbours' caravans were ruined. And it's a hoppy beer, so I said gold.'

Rachel Holliday, who set up Norfolk Brewhouse with her husband David two years ago, said: 'It's a great name and we will be brewing 'Tidal Gold' next week. We hope a few pints will be sold at the festival in support of the flood appeal.'

East Anglian breweries will be showcasing a variety of new beers during the festival, from May 22 to June 1.

Now in its fourth year, 44 pubs and 40 breweries are taking part, and there will be seven ale trails to enjoy.

As reported, parliamentarians will be able to enjoy three ales from Norfolk and Suffolk in the coming weeks.

The Strangers' Bar in the Palace of Westminster has lined up the ales for MPs and their guests to enjoy until June. Guest ales must be requested by the MP in whose constituency the brewery resides.

Hence, Lacons 'Legacy' has been requested by Brandon Lewis, MP for Great Yarmouth and community pubs minister. Lacons is also sponsoring this year's City of Ale launch party at Dragon Hall.

Mr Lewis said: 'I have been lobbying the house authorities for months to have a Lacons' ale on offer in the House of Commons – other MPs will be very jealous not to have such a fantastic tipple available in their areas.'

Norfolk Brewhouse's Moon Gazer ale was chosen by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, and Lowestoft-based brewery, Green Jack's Golden Best was requested by the MP for Waveney, Peter Aldous.

The festival ties in with the Evening News' Love your Local campaign, which aims to get people back into pubs and supporting local breweries.

The competition winner was announced at a City of Ale meeting at the Earlham Arms in Earlham Road yesterday. The next meeting will be at The Rose in Queens Road at 10am on Tuesday, May 13.
