An unusual spectacle descended on a peaceful golf course last week as a group of young gymnasts wearing colourful wigs and tutus picked up stones in a bid to raise money for their summer show.

Scores of youngsters aged four to 20 from Norwich's Chermond Gym donned the costumes for the fundraising event, and were given a donation by Bawburgh Golf Club, which will pay for new costumes, unicycle ramps and equipment including a Spanish web, which the gym is introducing.

The youngsters visited the golf course on Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm and Thursday from 2pm to 4pm.

Chermond Gym spokeswoman Justine Dixon said: 'It was really fun and all the kids dressed up. But if I never see a stone again it will be too soon - there were so many!

'We all brought trowels and screwdrivers and things to get them out, because some of them were quite wedged in, but I think we did very well.

'We had more than 40 people come along on the Tuesday, and about the same number on Thursday - some of them were the same people and some were different.'

The show, called the Circus of Life, will feature the Spanish Web, as well as aerial hoop, juggling, skipping, a new version of Swan Lake, and Britain's Got Talent entrants Kaylor on the trapeze.

Ian Ladbrooke, general manager of the golf course, said: 'We had to get some stone picking done on a large scale at short notice, because we needed to get the grass cut and the stones damage the mower blades, but it was difficult to get many members together at once to do it.

'My mother-in-law, Cherie Alcock, who runs Chermond Gym, said we they needed to raise funds for their show, and so we decided to combine the two. The kids did a great job - it was quite cold and they had stood in a field in their leotards.'

The show will be performed at 2.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturday, June 26, at the Hippodrome Circus in Yarmouth, and tickets are available from the box office on 01493 844172.
