A Norwich community centre is hoping to get another boost from the Comic Relief Community Cash Campaign after taking a slice of the grant money last year.

The Belvedere Community Centre, on Belvoir Street, Norwich, received 1,000 from the campaign in 2010 to buy a hot plate dispenser and a hot cabinet for their Wednesday lunch service.

Now they have applied for a slice of this year's Community Cash to revamp the facilities they offer to young people.

Sharon Betts, chairman of the Belvedere Community Centre, said: 'What we would like for 2011 is for a grant to help us transform our TV lounge and set up a garden project for our youngsters. They have already created bat boxes and a compost heap, but they want to add flowers and some new benches too.'

The community centre is a charity run by 14 volunteers whose aim is to provide a host of social events that anyone can take part in. Currently, it offers activities such as line dancing, Slimming World and live band nights, as well as renting out the rooms to organisations like St John Ambulance and the Green Party.

Mrs Betts continued: 'We would be lost without the support of grants. The income we have is spent on running the place, so the posh added extras are funded by people like the Evening News and Red Nose Day Community Cash Campaign. For us, getting the grant money is all about bringing the centre forward into the 21st century.'

Small organisations have the chance to apply for a wedge of 50,000 as part of this year's Evening News and Red Nose Day Community Cash Campaign. The grants between 500 and 1,000 are available to groups with an income of less than 50,000 in the past year, who are in the Norwich City Council area and are working within a disadvantaged or deprived community.

Forms can be obtained by writing to Red Nose Day Community Cash, Evening News, Prospect House, Rouen Road, Norwich, NR1 1RE.Application forms can also be picked up from the Evening News office at Prospect House or downloaded from www.eveningnews.co.uk. The deadline is on Friday, March 18. Completed applications should be sent to Norfolk Community Foundation, St James Mill, Whitefriars, Norwich, NR3 1SH.
