Archant

An anonymous music lover has brought the sound of 60s American pop to a Norwich road by modifying a sign to read 'Only the Lonely'.

Norwich City Council added the word ‘only’ to a sign indicating the road is for buses only between 7.30am and 9.30am – a sign which is only visible during those hours.

But the joker modified the sign, at the junction of Grove Road and Brazen Gate, to read Only the Lonely. The hit, written by Roy Orbison, climbed to the top of the UK charts in October 1960.

But a spokesman for the council said that the ‘only’ sign – and the addition will be removed.

“When potential enforcement action needs to be taken by local authorities they have to be sure of their ground as it’s becoming increasingly common for people to challenge it.

“Our initial interpretation of regulations on this matter was that the sign needed the word ‘only’ to be legal. However, having carefully reconsidered the regulations, we’re now confident that the word ‘only’ does not need to be added to take enforcement action and so we shall remove the ‘only’ along with the addition which has been made.”
