A city-based church is turning the traditional service on its head – throwing the sermon out of the window for a month and instead calling on the people of Norwich to ask their burning questions.

Members of the Proclaimers church have been out and about in the city armed with a video camera as they get members of the public to ask the questions about religion they have always wanted to ask.

Questions can also be submitted via email, the church's website and Twitter and during this month and they will be answered during the two weekly services at 10.30am and 6.30pm on Sundays at the Proclaimers' base in The Space, Roundtree Way, Sprowston.

Issues raised so far include 'what is the meaning of life?', 'why do good people get cancer?' and 'what is the point of marriage?'.

Some of Norfolk's great and good have also been asked to submit questions but are yet to respond.

Owen Morgan, executive pastor, said: 'We've always been a church that's sought to make what we talk about full of application and relevance to people's lives and to make sure we are responding to daily lives. We wanted to do something a bit different and throw the door open to people not only in the church but all of Norwich and Norfolk and get them to ask questions that they don't normally get to ask, that they daren't usually ask or they think no one else would be interested to ask.'

The first services which included the question-time, called FAQ, took place at the weekend with a panel of four giving answers. 'The response so far has been outstanding, we have had a number of emails from both people in the church and others,' said Mr Morgan.

'Of course there are going to be questions which are difficult to answer but we are hopefully going to try to answer them as best we can. It's about showing how the Bible can be a really useful tool for answering the questions of today.'

The Proclaimers Church has recently moved into the former Fabric Warehouse in Roundtree Way, Sprowston, which has been renovated into a building called The Space.
