Community Cash funds have already been put to use by more than 110 groups across Norwich - including Norwich Canoe Club.

Last year, the club was granted £1,000 to encourage beginners and disabled people to take up the sport.

The money allowed Norwich Canoe Club to buy a double kayak, allowing experienced canoeists to take newcomers out on the water and get them involved in club life.

And the club has further ambitious plans: when its new community paddle sports centre is finished, it will be able to cater fully for disabled athletes.

The club already works with Norwich Day Care to put on mini regattas using paddle machines, so members with disabilities can engage in physical activity.

Coach Dean Grady said: “It’s been fantastic for us –- letting us get more people on the water and increasing our community work with schools, scouts, women’s groups and so on.

“That in turn has brought in more members, and generated more interest in the club as a whole.

“I’d recommend any group in a similar position to apply and try to get their hands on a grant.”

Norwich Canoe Club has a record of success: in 2004, member Ian Wynne won an Olympic bronze medal, while Timmy Pendle is currently on the Olympic development programme.
