A Norwich-born musician is finding internet success with his band, attracting thousands of fans eager to download their material.

Tim Gyton is a bassist with Magazine Gap, a London-based band bringing together various sounds, including urban, hip-hop, blues, jazz and even country music.

Its YouTube channel is proving a hit and was the 43rd most-viewed UK artist’s channel for November.

Since forming just over a year ago, the band has also attracted 164,000 friends on its MySpace site and a further 5,887 friends on Facebook.

“There are not actually that many artists who get major amounts of downloads, but we are well up there, so in that respect it’s going very well indeed,” said Mr Gyton, who studied at Thorpe St Andrew High School and City College Norwich.

“It’s a very hard market to crack, but we seem to be cracking it.”

The 33-year-old, who now lives at Shipdham, near Dereham, said the band had been able to maintain its artistic integrity and musical control because it was self-financed.

Magazine Gap launched its first album, Light and Shade, in December after recording at studios around the world, including Abbey Road and Capitol Studios in Hollywood.

Mr Gyton, who owns the Norfolk Guitar and Bass Centre, in Watton, said fans had been “chomping at the bit” for the record and it had gone down well with followers.

So far, 1,000 copies have been produced and the band is on the look-out for a distribution deal.

Since forming in mid-2009, Magazine Gap has undertaken two tours of America, including playing New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

Members are looking forward to kicking off this year in style with their biggest ever gig at the Jim Marshall Auditorium in Milton Keynes on January 29.

The name Magazine Gap is taken from a road in Hong Kong, where three of the band grew up.
