This pleasant walk follows footpaths and quiet lanes with good views. It passes St Mary's Church, East Ruston, with its interesting font and rood screen and it then goes along the edge of the East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden and offers an opportunity to visit these wonderful gardens either during or after the walk.

The final part of the walk goes along the Weavers' Way, this section being on the track of the former railway line between North Walsham and Stalham.

The church and the gardens are open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons also Bank Holidays from the end of March to October 27. There are no refreshments on this walk but The Butchers Arms public house is nearby.

? From the car park go back to the lane and turn right. Go past Burnells Farm and then, at a junction of lanes, turn left over a stile beside a wide metal gate. Go ahead across the field (but if there are still temporary electric fences, keep near the electric fence on the left and then continue ahead on a grassy path between two electric fences) to the stile. Cross and go ahead, through a gate and across a field to the left of a group of small trees to a board up the bank and a fingerpost at a lane.

? Turn left and follow the lane round right and left bends at Old Farm, and then turn right at the T-junction into Drabbs Lane. Ignore footpaths on the left and right and then, when the lane bends left, turn squarely right into a wide track. As the track bends rightwards, go left on a signed path (a marker post and then a fingerpost) heading towards the church.

? At the corner of the field go over the bank on a small rather overgrown path and then follow the path across this field and then go leftwards to a lane. Cross the lane and continue rightwards on a field path towards the church. At the end of the field, go over the bank and then left and right and onto a grassy path heading directly towards East Ruston Church.

? Cross the main road and enter the churchyard. Go past St Mary's Church, making time for a visit if open, and head to the far right corner of the churchyard. Go past the corrugated bin and through a small gap in the hedge at the corner. In the field, go ahead across a small meadow on the left and walk beside the high hedge of the Old Vicarage Garden.

? Follow the path with the hedge on the left all the way to a road. There are tantalizing views of the garden through gaps in the hedge, also a view of Happisburgh Lighthouse across the garden and through a circular hole in the hedge on the far side. To visit the garden, turn left along the road to the entrance. Otherwise, to continue the walk, turn right and immediately go round a left bend. Then turn right at the junction into Church Farm Road.

? Follow the road round several bends and past a path on the left to the main road. Turn left and carefully walk along the verge on the left for a short distance. Then fork right across the road into Long Common Road. Keep ahead at the junction opposite Old Manor Farm. Continue along the lane, ignoring a crossing footpath, then, where the lane turns right, keep ahead along a signed, enclosed footpath.

? At the next lane go right and, almost immediately, turn right again into a field and go diagonally leftwards across the field on an unsigned footpath (with a church tower ahead in the far distance). On reaching a lane at a junction, keep straight ahead along High Hill Road. Go past some houses and then turn left into a signed footpath with a hedge on the right. When the hedge ends continue ahead and then go into an enclosed path to reach a road (Chequers Street) with houses on both sides.

? Turn right along the road and then, just before the last house on the left and as the road bends slightly right, take the signed path on the left. At the crossing path, turn right. This is the Weavers' Way. Follow it for a short distance and then turn right back into the car park.

JOIN THE RAMBLERS

The Ramblers is Britain's walking charity which has been working to encourage more people to take up walking and to safeguard footpaths and the countryside for 75 years.
