A Norfolk vicar showed his flock how to celebrate the bank holiday weekend when he raced a spacehopper and painted his face at a community event to raise money for the village church.

Rev Paul Seabrook, vicar at St Edmund's Church in Taverham, is usually seen in more dignified attire and carrying out less frenetic activities.

But he was one of the star attractions at yesterday's May Fayre which was attended by several hundred villagers with money raised going towards the upkeep of the 1,000-year-old church, parts of which date back to Saxon times.

He said: 'You are asked to do all kinds of things as a vicar, but this is one of the most unusual things I have done. But it was for a good cause and we wanted everyone to have a good time. The organiser suggested it to me and I could not really say no.

'I was not at all embarrassed as the day was all about the community and we are very pleased so many villagers, up to about 400,- came along.'

The event was held on the Glebe outside Taverham church, and Vee Tebble, the church's press officer, said it was an 'absolutely fantastic' day.

She said: 'It was great despite the strong wind. We have been holding May fayres for more than 10 years, but this has to be the best yet. Everybody had such a good time and the village has really turned out for us. People enjoyed the live music and lots of families and children attended.

'We don't know yet how much money we have raised, but we're sure we have beaten any previous total.'

Among those enjoying the day was Ian Colman, who conducts Taverham Brass Band, and his children Samuel, four, and Matthew, seven. Mr Colman said: 'It's been a very nice day and we got to meet some friends here. It's nice to have somewhere to bring the family.'

Attractions at the event included live music from V8 Rumble rockabilly band, a barbecue provided by PB George Meats Ltd, a refreshments and cake stall, a second-hand bookstall, crafts and art exhibition and games to suit everyone from one to 100.
