Two students from north of Norwich have been shortlisted for a national competition for knitted jewellery and accessories.

Textile students Hannah Sayers, of Rackheath, and Francesca Nelson, of Salhouse, have been shortlisted for the Clothes Show Live Young Knitter of the Year competition, along with their fellow Paston Sixth Form College student Bethany Curtis, of Roughton.

The 16-year-olds will now get the joy of seeing their work presented on the catwalk as it is judged at the National Exhibition Centre, in Birmingham, early next month.

The competition brief requested that students produce an individual piece of jewellery or an accessory that represents vintage charm, nature and modern inspirations.

Finished designs could be hats, neck pieces, stranded necklaces, belts or corsages.

Francesca made a cherry brooch inspired by print on an old fabric.

She said: 'Cherries are quite a vintage thing; I wanted to make something unique and inspire people.'

Hannah designed and knitted a necklace using knitted beads from felted and non-felted yarn, inspired by a vintage plate.

She said: 'My nan tried to teach me to knit but I was never any good at it. She'd be really proud of me now.'

Bethany made a brooch inspired by a friend's cameo ring.

The teenagers now have to wait until December 6 when they will see their creations judged.

The winner will have their designs published by Rowan publication and Mollie Makes, and they will receive a hamper of yarn, knitting accessories and free tickets to the show.

Textiles tutor Sue Rainsford said she was really impressed with the students' original ideas.

She said: 'Craft is very popular at the moment and these students learned to knit and made new and exciting objects. Fingers crossed for December 6 at the NEC.'
