A team of four teed off for charity as they played four rounds of golf in one day.

Macmillan Cancer Support ambassador Andrew Hadley and three friends took part in the Longest Day Golf Challenge at Weston Park golf club yesterday.

The event saw the team, named Norfolk and Good, walk about 40 miles in their bid to raise 20,000 for cancer patients and their families in Norfolk.

They started the challenge from 6am.

Mr Hadley, 58, from Coltishall, said: 'It's exhausting. It's not only walking that distance but playing golf as well which is a physical sport.

'Physically it is very demanding and we've all been in training. I've been walking in Austria and the others have been canoeing and doing lots of cycling. We have been taking it really seriously so we can get around the four rounds and raise as much money as we can for Macmillan.'

Mr Hadley took part in the event with financial director Chris Varvel, builder Kevin Collins and architect Ian Malton,

All of the money raised will go Macmillan in Norfolk.

The men received donations from Reepham High School, Reepham Rotary Club and investment management firm Brewin Dolphin.

Mr Hadley, who raised 12,500 for Macmillan when he walked the 90 miles of Hadrian's Wall with his wife Di last September, said: 'People have been so generous in their support and we are on target to raise 20,000.'

Helen Chapman, fundraising manager for Norfolk, said: 'Macmillan is incredibly grateful to them and for aiming to raise 20,000 in one day is absolutely mind blowing.

'We are thrilled they chose to support Macmillan and the amount they raise could fund a Macmillan Nurse for about four to five months. 'They truly are helping us get closer to hopefully one day being able to help everyone affected by cancer.'

The challenge was part of a nationwide initiative which will see some 300 teams up and down the country playing four rounds of golf in one day.

Last year, 395,000 was raised nationally and it is hoped about 500,000 will be raised this year.

In Norfolk alone, more than 5,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Across the county, there are currently more than 50 Macmillan health and social care professionals. These include Macmillan nurses, doctors, dieticians and occupational therapists.
