BT customers are urged to be vigilant after a conman, claiming to represent the company, rang a Bradwell woman and tried to extract her debit card details.
The man contacted Rebecca Balls, 46, of Sparrow Close, at about 2pm yesterday and said because the network was being switched from an analogue to a digital system, her phone line would be cut off unless she immediately paid a charge of 6.
Mrs Balls, who works at Birds Eye in Lowestoft, said: 'When I said I wanted confirmation by email or letter he became abusive and the conversation came to an end.
'He said his name was John Hughes and he worked at BT's Stoke office, but when I rang BT, I was told there was no such employee.'
A BT spokesman urged customers to never give out card details over the phone and confirmed incidence of a similar scam before Christmas had been reported.
