A bereaved mother has succeeded in her goal of establishing a charity to help other families devastated by similar tragedies pay for a lasting memorial to their children.

Karen Murray-Tye, a former Hellesdon High School pupil, has set up Hana's Gift in memory of her daughter who was stillborn.

Mrs Murray-Tye, who has two other children, Eloise and Connor, said she was so affected by her own tragedy that she wanted to do something to help other people in similar situations.

She came up with the idea at the end of last year and is delighted to announce that it has since become a registered charity. She said: 'We have become a registered charity with the charity commission, which we see as a really positive step and something we didn't expect to achieve so soon.'

Mrs Murray-Tye, who last year received 500 from the Darren Huckerby Trust set up by former Canaries star Darren Huckerby to provide support for charities across Norfolk, said the charity had already been able to help a number of people. She said: 'We have started to help more families and the first headstone that we helped fund has been laid.'

People will be able to find out more about the charity, and raise much needed funds, at a summer fete in Aylsham next month.

The event takes place at the Aylsham Lodge Hotel, Norwich Road, Aylsham, on Saturday, August 13 between noon and 5pm.

There will be lots of activities for children to enjoy, including a bouncy castle, face-painting, games and activities, as well as a BBQ, tombola and raffle. There will also be stalls selling second-hand baby clothes, toys and books at the event.

In 2006, Mrs Murray-Tye who was pregnant with her first child, Hana, went to hospital after realising there might be a problem about six months into her pregnancy. The midwife could not find a heartbeat and so she went for a scan which confirmed the baby had died.

The devastating experience prompted Mrs Murray-Tye, who lives in Aylsham with husband Paul, to help others who have lost a young baby or a child by helping to provide funds for memorials or memory boxes.
