A Norwich-based charity has seen a record number of volunteers so far this year.

Staff at Voluntary Norfolk's Norwich volunteer centre in Pottergate, in the city centre, dealt with 571 volunteering enquiries during January – a new record - and February is already shaping up to be another bumper month.

A special volunteering open day on February 1 attracted 100 potential volunteers to the centre, all of whom were advised about the range of opportunities available with groups and charities across the county.

It is believed that although the citizens of Norwich and Norfolk have always been keen to help others by giving up their free time, skills and enthusiasm, the recession has given many people added impetus to come forward.

Andrew Morter, the Norwich volunteer centre co-ordinator, said: 'We are delighted to be able to help so many people find the right volunteering opportunity.

'Volunteers make a huge difference to the lives of individuals and whole communities across Norfolk and they get a great deal back in return. 'Volunteering can lead to increased confidence and skill-levels and it is something that potential employers value when they see it on a CV, so really everyone benefits when you volunteer.'
