And now Rob Whitworth has trained his lens on Norwich – to amazing effect.

The Bafta-winning filmmaker has shot a short film that sees the audience flying in and around Norwich Cathedral and soaring above the cityscape.

Norwich... a Story is being revealed today by the Cathedral and will be used by VisitNorwich for a digital marketing campaign funded by Norwich BID that aims to increase the number of visitors to the city, especially from London.

Mr Whitworth, who won a Bafta for his Planet Earth II work, has given the video to the cathedral. He has shot similar films all over the world.

The partnership with Norwich Cathedral began in 2014 after James Shelton, the historic venue’s marketing manager, spotted a story in our sister paper, the EDP, about his film about Barcelona.

Mr Whitworth, a Norwich School of Art and Design graduate who lives in Norwich with his
wife Sue and their two children, said: “Norwich is a beautiful city with so much history. I’ve had a great time exploring and filming some of the sights during this project, experiencing some of the best views of Norwich with the aim of capturing them in the best light.”

About his style of video, he said: “We made our first video in 2011 in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and just put it on the internet and we got one million views within three days. Over the years we’ve developed what we call Flow Motion which is a single take, so the camera takes on the role of the character and moves impossibly around a destination.

“The idea is to give people an idea of space, rather than conventional jump cut filmmaking of different scene, different scene, different scene. It starts with a wide shot where you can see the cathedral’s there and then we go through the door.”

The cathedral has about 100,000 visitors a year, and Mr Shelton said he hoped the video would broaden its base.

“The video is spectacular and it shows vantage points that people don’t normally get to see,” he said.

“We want to reach out to the community and say we’re here, it’s your cathedral, come and experience this. If people see the video and have a liking for it, please share – we want to see how far this video can go.”

Nick Bond, VisitNorwich’s head of tourism, said the film showed “a beautiful city, stunningly portrayed” and would be a great boost for a digital tourism campaign soon to start and which aims to attract more visitors from London.

He said Norwich receives on average 11.4 million visitors a year, with visits to Norwich worth more than £700 million per year.

The new VisitNorwich campaign is being funded by Norwich BID and delivered with the help of Norwich-based agency Fountain.

Mr Bond said: “We’ve got, in London, one of the world’s biggest tourism markets, for all practical purposes, right on our doorstep – and strategically and tactically we’re taking our message – that is to say, making it very clear to consumers the benefits of being at leisure in Norwich – to a London audience. The potential is vast.”

Stefan Gurney, Norwich BID’s executive director, said Mr Whitworth’s “beautifully shot and inspiring” film was a great asset for the city, as was the great partnership between different organisations to spread the word.
