New dementia support service opens in Cromer

A new telephone service aims to help people find out what support is available to them when a relative is diagnosed with dementia.
The scheme, which was launched at Danbury Lodge, in Cromer, yesterday, will give people the opportunity to speak to someone for advice.
It is hoped that the service will benefit carers who struggle to use the internet, individuals living with dementia and local businesses.
Laura Lodge, head of the dementia unit, said: “I think there is a big demand for this, especially in our local area. The idea came from carers who said that when a loved one is diagnosed with dementia, they don’t know who to talk to or where to get advice from.”
The dementia information hub will be based at Danbury Lodge, which forms part of the Royal British Legion’s Halsey House care home.
It is one of many projects funded by the charity and is partly reliant on funding from events such as this year’s Poppy Appeal.
Staff working at the hub will be able to send people to the relevant dementia organisation or service depending on what they need.
And businesses will be able to find out what they should do if they think a customer has the condition.
Danbury Lodge, which is a specialist dementia care wing, provides full-time care for around 16 people.
Laura Morton, head of care services, said: “The number of people with dementia is set to increase considerably over the next few years, which is why the legion is continuing to expand its range of services for older people.”
