New curry festival to be launched in Norwich

Norwich has had its fair share of music, film and arts festivals but this weekend will see the launch of a unique occasion – celebrating one of the nation’s most popular dishes.

Imam Uddin, owner of Roti restaurant, on the corner of Finkelgate and Queen’s Road in Norwich, is set to launch the city’s first curry festival this Sunday.

Held alongside the Norfolk Food Festival, the festival will give people the chance try out a range of different types of curry.

It will also help show how local produce can be used in Bangladeshi and Indian catering sectors.

Mr Uddin, who organises a curry festival every year in Brick Lane, London, where he owns another restaurant and which is lined with curry houses, said: “We have many wonderful festival enjoyed by the people of Norfolk and Norwich and by adding the curry festival to our summer calendar, it will give people a chance to enjoy locally-produced products with Bangladeshi and Indian spice.

“Every festival in Norfolk and Norwich is a success and we hope to see this curry festival as another success for our city.”

The curry festival will be held on each Sunday of September and will include October 2. People will be able to pay a set price and try a range of different dishes.

The dishes, made from traditional and authentic recipes, will include Great Yarmouth sea fish dipped in Bangladeshi spice, chicken spiced with Norwich Colman’s Mustard using poultry from The Moor in Banham, near Attleborough, and Banham lamb with Indian aromatic spice and fresh herbs.

Mr Uddin, who opened his Norwich restaurant in 2008, added: “In this curry festival I am inviting everyone to come and enjoy, and also our local farmers to come see how we can use local product in Bangladeshi and Indian catering sectors.

“I hope next year more business will be involved to celebrate the next festival on a larger scale for everyone to enjoy. So let’s get ‘jel crazzi’ and enjoy the festival.”

The festival will be held from 12pm to 9pm on September 11, 18 and 25 and on October 2.

The Norfolk Food Festival, sponsored by the Evening News’ sister paper the EDP, officially kicked off on Saturday and will run until October 3.
