South Norfolk Council has welcomed a new chairman for the 2010/11 year. Jeremy Savage, who became a Conservative councillor in 2007, takes over the post from outgoing chairman Bev Spratt.

South Norfolk Council has welcomed a new chairman for the 2010/11 year.

Jeremy Savage, who became a Conservative councillor in 2007, takes over the post from outgoing chairman Bev Spratt.

Mr Savage's theme for the year, called Youth and the Future, will see him working to support young people entering education and employment and support potential mergers between services with neighbouring Breckland Council.

“I find the youth endlessly challenging, endlessly interesting and I look forward to seeing what we can do for the youth in our programme this coming year,” he said.

The full-time grain broker grew up near Saffron Walden, in Essex, and moved to south Norfolk in the early 1970s. He currently lives in Wortell, and is a ward member for Harleston.

He sits on South Norfolk Council's licensing and appeals committee, but is also involved in projects and bodies which aim to protect the area's rural market towns and enhance the Waveney Valley.

South Norfolk Council's new vice-chairman is Sue Thomson. John Fuller was re-elected as leader of the council.
