Having also recently won an EDP Food and Drink Award thanks to the excellent quality and diversity of the food products on offer, Norwich Market is taking part in the yearly National Market's Association, which runs a competition to decide on Britain's favourite market.

Norwich Market communications officer Vicky Boorman said the council-run market has had a fantastic year with occupancy rates soaring from 76pc to 91pc with many new food stalls joining up.

She said: 'We'd love Norwich Market to win but we need people to vote!'

As one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in the country, Norwich Market now has a more diverse range of eating options than ever before amongst its 189 stall holders.

Alongside its long-standing fish and chips, bacon rolls and hot dogs, there is also South East Asian, Spanish, Italian, French and Chilean street food available along with fresh juices, falafels, lasagne and deli sandwiches.

The recent arrival of pop-up stalls has also given it a boost by allowing people the opportunity to try trading on a trial basis.

Voting for Britain's favourite market is now underway and will run until 11.59pm on November 30.

Anyone can apply and you need to put in the name of your favourite market.

On December 4, the six markets that have received the most votes will be announced and will then be carried over to the next phase of the judging process.

The number of votes received will not count towards the next assessment phase. The six markets will then each receive a prearranged visit from representatives from the judges panel before Christmas.

During their visits the judges will be looking for evidence of:

n Stall vacancy rates on the market

n How the market meets the needs of the local community

n The vibrancy of the market.

On a different day, a mystery shopper visit will be undertaken to see why customers like the market and why traders want to trade.
