An adventurous sailor is due to arrive in Norwich in a tin boat for the second time to raise £20,000 for Alzheimer's Research UK.

Major Michael Stanley, also known as Major Mick, from Winchester, sailed around the country in a tin boat called Tintanic during the first lockdown and loved it so much he has decided to do it again with a new and improved "Tintanic II.

Major Mick's first boat sailed in Henley, where he was joined by adventurer Ben Fogle, Beaulieu in the New Forest, the Pirate’s Castle at Regent’s Canal in London, Manchester and Cardiff, and most recently in Bristol and Cambridge.

The sailor will arrive at Norwich Canoe Club on Friday, July 23 and was inspired to take on the challenge after seeing the effect the condition had on friends and family.

Major Mick said: “2020 showed us the importance of the incredible work that UK scientists, doctors and researchers are capable of, and with your support we can make a difference, to find a cure for this distressing condition and the diseases that cause it."

Ian Wilson, executive director of fundraising and communications at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Our vital research is only made possible thanks to our incredible supporters, and we’re so grateful to Major Mick for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK.

"Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population – one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition.

"Fantastic fundraising efforts like this will help us to make life-changing research breakthroughs for people with dementia.”

Major Mick could be in for a treat when he arrives in Norwich as the city is soon set to swelter in a much needed mini heatwave.

On Friday, July 23 and for the week before there is very little chance of rain and instead warm sunshine is set to take centre stage, making for perfect conditions.

Temperatures are set to stay around 23C but there could also be highs of 27C expected.

High tide in Norwich is expected at 9.37am and 9.53pm with low tide expected at 3.58am and 3.57pm.
