A key figure at the University of East Anglia's Sportspark has retired after more than 20 years' work at the university.

Director of physical education and sport Keith Nicholls stepped down after 11 years at the sports centre, which came about after his initial suggestion in 1991.

Under his leadership, staff created the Starlight Walk that has raised over 300,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in Norfolk, and this year through a venture with Archant newspapers, the Sportspark has donated more than 5,600 to eight local charitable causes. In recognition of Mr Nicholls' vision and contribution to the Sportspark, the large indoor hall is being renamed the Keith Nicholls Arena.

Mr Nicholls will be starting a sports equipment manufacturing business, the profits from which will go to the Ruth Nicholls Volleyball Foundation, set up in memory of his late daughter.
