Residents and councillors have opposed plans to build 259 homes in a village over a number of concerns about the development.

Around 40 local residents went to a meeting of Horsford Parish Council to discuss an application by David Wilson Homes for 11.27 hectares of land to the east of Holt Road.

Part of the development would see 85 affordable houses built, which are aimed at people whose needs are not met by the housing market.

Chris Brown, a member of the parish council, said: “My biggest worry is the effect on the infrastructure – where are we going to put the children who need to go to school?

“We should have hard negotiations with David Wilson Homes to see what we can get back for the community.”

He urged residents to write to Broadland District Council setting out their objections to the scheme.

It is the district council that will decide whether or not to approve the application.

The parish council decided it was opposed to the application and instructed clerk Jim Graves to outline its reasons in a letter to the district authority.

These are:

• The plans would lead to the infrastructure being over-stretched, affecting services such as the local medical practice, schools, and roads.

• Opposition to a road that links the site with a current development which is nearing completion at Butterfly Mill. According to the plans the road would only be used by buses and emergency services but the council said it had concerns about the monitoring of that rule.

• Concerns over the junction where the development meets Green Lane, which the council said was blighted by speeding.
