A lap dancing club in Norwich looks set to be denied permission to open until 6am, after concerns were raised by families and Norfolk police.

But the Platinum Lace nightclub, in Dove Street, could yet be allowed to open an hour earlier and close an hour later than at present.

The club's owner Simon Warr had asked Norwich City Council for permission to open the club from 7pm until 6am daily, a change to the existing opening times of 8pm until 3am.

However, officers at Norwich City Council are recommending members of the council's planning committee allow it to open from 7pm until 4am.

The application will be discussed when councillors meet today.

A 10-signature petition against the opening time changes has been lodged with the city council, with seven letters of objection.

Norfolk police said they had been called to very few incidents at or near the club and the force was happy for it to open until 4am, but not beyond those hours. Original plans, since dropped, had also asked for permission to open from midday on Fridays and Saturdays, for private parties.

Protesters had concerns such clubs objectify women, that it was near the Games Workshop business used by young people and that the club was in an inappropriate part of the city.

Lesley Grahame, Green city councillor for Thorpe Hamlet, backed their concerns, saying: 'I share the objections of many residents to this extension of hours.'

But officers, in their report to councillors, said the use of the premises as a lap dance club was not for consideration, just the hours extension.

They recommend approval for extra hours, although a separate bid to open until 6am daily is set to be refused permission under delegated powers.
