Folk living in and around a busy Thorpe St Andrew thoroughfare have raised their concerns over existing and planned cycle lanes.

In March 2021, Norfolk County Council proposed changes to St Williams Way to improve safety for those walking and cycling in the area.

The works, which commenced on April 11, are due for completion in mid-June.

They include the construction of new two metre-wide mandatory cycle lanes with separator islands between Margetson Avenue in the direction of Thor Loke.

There are already stretches of cycle lanes marked out with wands along St Williams Way, which locals have flagged as often muddy and flooded.

Street cleaning equipment, operated by Broadland District Council, is unable to reach the kerbside due to the wands in the road.

Keith Snelling, 80, lives on the corner of St Williams Way and Margetson Avenue.

He said: "My days of cycling are passed but all these plans seem a little over the top.

"You don't tend to see that many people cycling down them.

"I'm a bit disturbed by the actual wands - I don't know if they collapse if someone was to hit one.

"I'm concerned about the positioning of some of them and how visible they are.

"When it's been raining and there's dirt on the road, at dusk you can hardly see them at all."

He also spoke of concerns that the general lack of maintenance along the cycle lanes could pose flood risk, if street cleaners can't access the kerbside because of the lanes.

Wife Teresa added: "I can't see much point in the lanes as they finish right outside our house. Are the cycles supposed to continue into traffic at the end of the lane?"

Nearby neighbour Richard Rimmington, 82, added: "My main concern is that if you have a wider cycle lane on both sides, there will be parts of the road - which are not as wide as others - where the lane for motorists will be quite a bit narrower.

"It feels far more dangerous."

Both Norfolk County Council and Broadland District Council were contacted for comment but did not provide a response.
