Organised by the town council as part of its initiative to clean the area, members of the council, Norfolk Constabulary's Safer Neighbourhood Team and Circle Housing Wherry joined forces to take action against the litter bugs.

Town mayor John Ward said: 'We are very grateful to everyone who pitched in to help clean-up Thorpe St Andrew. We are especially grateful to the local police team and Circle Housing Wherry officers who have made a really significant contribution to getting the town cleaned-up.'

The Litter Action Day was also part of a project to get Thorpe St Andrew gleaming before yesterday's St George's Day celebrations at Dussindale Park, off Pound Lane.

The volunteers helped to fill four skips with dumped rubbish from around the estate and clear gardens to make The Denes area a safe and pleasant place for everyone to enjoy this summer.

A large number of residents also came out to help each other remove a vast amount of unwanted items and one resident kindly provided the Circle Housing Wherry volunteers with cold drinks.

Town council members, staff and officers also joined in with litter picking at Dussindale Park whilst contractors working for the environment department of Broadland District Council were also busy litter picking along the ring road in Thorpe St Andrew.
