He is a lifelong Ipswich Town fan but now he's flying the flag for arch rivals Norwich as the epic promotion push reaches its nerve-shredding climax.

Canaries fans heading to Rotherham for today's crunch Championship clash will be able to see a huge City flag flying from the top of County Hall.

Norfolk County Council is backing the club's promotion bid by flying the giant flag until the end of the season.

But for NPS facilities manager Graham Wray, the man responsible for raising the flag, there were 'mixed emotions' as he is an Ipswich Town fan.

Mr Wray, who was born in Ipswich but has worked at County Hall for 38 years, kept his Tractor Boys scarf on as he raised the giant City flag.

He said: 'I think a bit of friendly rivalry is no bad thing and I hope that both teams do well – but I hope Ipswich do better than Norwich at the end of the season.

'It's nice for the Norwich supporters because if they travel away they will probably be heading away from Martineau Lane and be able to see the flag from the roof.'

He added: 'I think Norwich will go up, I'm not so sure about Ipswich.

'Really Norwich should've gone up automatically and then Ipswich in the play-offs and we'd have two teams (in the Premier League) which would be fantastic for East Anglia.'

County council leader George Nobbs also attended yesterday's flag-raising event.

He said: 'Graham was born in Ipswich but has lived his entire life in Norwich but still hasn't seen the light.

'I was born in Norwich but would still support this team if I was born in the South Sea Islands because they are such a superb team.'

Mr Nobbs said the flag would remain in place until 'Norwich achieve their goal'.

He added: 'We're flying the flag for Norwich. We're still beating the drum for Norfolk.'
