A much-loved church in the heart of old Norwich has produced a wacky guide and a calendar to raise funds and awareness of a beautiful building.

It is a medieval building playing an active role in 21st century Norwich and one which has reached out to its people over the centuries.

St George's Church in Colegate is very much like the city it stands in – attractive, modest and full of surprises.

Not only does the community it serves care so deeply about it but so do lots of passers-by because it sits slap-bang in the middle of Over-the-Water on the main pedestrian crossroads.

Caring for a building such as this one takes time and money. In recent times the kitchen and toilets have been updated and a new parish room is now well used.

The members are always looking at new ways of raising money by offering value for money and now a new, and slightly wacky, A-Z guide along with an attractive kitchen calendar, has come on the market.

The idea for the guide came to Bobby Burrage while waiting for communion one Sunday morning.

One of the attractions of the church is the superb lettering that can be found on the stone ledgers for which the church is famous.

The letter 'g' caught his eye and he was struck by the beauty and elegance of the letterform.

'I could only imagine the stonemason delicately cutting into the surface, creating a form that would remain for hundreds of years to come,' he said.

'I found myself scanning the floor for more carvings in the stone, each with its own story.'

And so the unique A-Z of interesting facts and tales using the lettersforms followed.

Each of the 26 articles is illustrated by a photograph of one of the letters that can be found on the ledger slabs in the building.

'The lettering provides us with the inspiration for our A to Z guide of the church and its treasures,' said Priest-in-Charge Phillip McFadyen.

The people responsible for this wonderful pocket-guide, containing some fascinating and quirky facts and figures, are to be congratulated.

It is a slice of our history concentrating on St George's and its community and I will wager that even those who think they know their Norwich will discover something new.

With the 2012 calendar, also containing snippets of information about St George's, it makes for an ideal present which anyone with a love of Norwich will enjoy.

All the money raised goes towards the upkeep of the church.

The A-Z book is 10 and the calendar is 6. Both are on sale at St George's Music Shop – less than 50 yards down the road from the church.
