More than 100 families struggling to make ends meet will find Christmas day a little easier thanks to a huge increase in donations to a Norfolk charity.

Love Norwich appealed to the public to help make up gift wrapped hampers to distribute to people struggling to feed their families on December 25.

Their appeal was featured in the Evening News and this year the group has seen a 75% increase in donations, which was founded by Nowich-based church Proclaimers.

Love Norwich project manager Gemma Neill said: “It’s a sad fact that there are families in Norfolk who struggle to afford food, but at the same time it is so encouraging to see the hundreds of Norfolk residents willing to step in the gap and do something so kind for a stranger they may never meet.

“Many members of our church have also taken the appeal into their workplace and asked for colleagues to jump on board with the appeal.

“I think members of the community are more aware of the real need for food for some families following increased attention on this subject by both national and local media.

“Food poverty is an issue on our own doorstep and hopefully these hampers will not only meet a practical need for local families, but also let them know they are valued members of our community who are not forgotten.

“At its heart, Christmas is all about giving.”

The hampers were distributed across the county to groups working with disadvantaged families and individuals, including Norfolk Carers Support.

Under 25s Services Manager John Lee said: “We are thankful for the generosity of Love Norwich and their volunteers.

“Last year our carers really enjoyed the lavish hampers donated by Love Norwich and it’s fantastic to hear that double the number of carers will benefit this year.

“The hampers provided a welcome surprise and a luxurious treat for people who spend their lives caring for a family member.”
