The Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant on Mile Cross Lane in Norwich is to remain shut until the end of the week after it failed to meet hygiene standards.

A sign appeared on the door of the fast food restaurant earlier this week which said: “Sorry for any inconvenience but we are closed until further notice.”

KFC confirmed it had closed the outlet as it failed to meet “high quality standards”.

Janet Cox, head of health, safety and environment at KFC UK and Ireland, said: “We have temporarily closed our Mile Cross Lane drive-thru in Norwich as it hasn’t met the high quality standards we demand at KFC.

“We are deep cleaning the restaurant at the moment and will retrain all team members so we can re-open by the end of the week.”

The fast-food outlet was lasted visited by food hygiene inspectors from Broadland District Council in October when it was given a food hygiene rating of three out of five, which means standards of the store are “generally satisfactory”.

The news follows the closure of two other KFC outlets in Norwich in recent months.

The Prince of Wales Road KFC shut in April, with the initial reason given as “essential maintenance work”. KFC then confirmed in May that the outlet had closed permanently. The Dereham Road store was closed at the end of last year.

Last month a spokesperson for KFC said that a new KFC restaurant would now be coming to Norwich, although did not give a location.

“It’s very early days at the moment, but we are excited to be working on plans to open a new restaurant in Norwich,” he said at the time. “We’re currently looking for the right location and hope to share some good news in the future.”

There are two other KFC restaurants in Norwich at Chapelfield and at Longwater.
