Wet and windy weather is expected across Norfolk in the run up to new year celebrations.

This evening’s rain is expected to clear with a chance of rain in south Norfolk tomorrow while northern parts of the county are likely to stay dry.

Downpours are likely over the next few days with gusts of wind of up to 50 miles per hour expected overnight from Friday to Saturday.

Weather forecaster Chris Bell, from Weatherquest, based at the University of East Anglia, said: “There is a chance of rain pretty much every day leading up to New Year’s Eve. It is quite possible there will be up to an inch of rain between now and New Year’s across the county.

“We’ve already seen some localised flooding on country roads and that will continue to be an issue for the next few days.”

Elsewhere in the country, there could be between one to two inces of rain in Western areas on Friday and Saturday.

The Met Office has said coastal areas in the south-west of England were in particular danger of collapsing cliff edges and rockfall.

Around 470 properties have flooded since last Wednesday, while Floodline revealed it had received 18,000 calls during the recent wet weather.

The worst-affected areas have been south-west England and stretches along the south coast from Cornwall to Kent, along with Wales and northern Scotland.

In Devon and Cornwall alone, 245 properties flooded over the weekend, and although a number of people were evacuated, most have now returned home.
