Communities secretary John Denham visited Norfolk today where he pledged to continue to invest in skills and tackle deprivation in the county if his party returned to power after the election.

On the day that Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that the country would go to the polls on May 6, Mr Denham, who is also Labour MP for Southampton Itchen, visited Norwich, which he said was a 'crucial place' for his party to win votes.

'We had two Labour MPs in the city in the recent past and we want that again after the election,' he said.

Mr Denham said there were three key points in the election: making sure the country continued to recover from the recession; protecting frontline services; and making sure this is done in a way that is fair to protect hardworking families.
