Spud was called into action after one of the linesmen got injured and had to hold up the board to show 10 minutes of added on time as well displaying the numbers for a late Preston sub.

He featured on Sky Sports News and the BBC's Final Score and has gained 1000 extra Twitter followers.

'It's been crazy and I'm overwhelmed by the attention I've had if I'm honest!' said Spud, who revealed it was actually the sixth time he had done the job at Carrow Road.

'I'm pretty modest and I didn't have to do anything really apart from hold the board up a couple of times! I just wanted to help out.'

Spud was fourth official for the whole pre-season game against Everton in 2010 and was also called upon as a stand in when officials got injured in league games Sheffield Wednesday (2001), Derby (2008), Leyton Orient (2009) and the league cup game against Barnet in 2007.

'One of the stewards knew I'd done it before so that is what I got asked. And I was sitting in my brother's seat in the front row of the City Stand near the dugouts, so I was pretty close by.'

Spud was going out after the game so had a shirt on rather than his usual City colours, but still had to take his shirt off and use an official jacket.

'Seeing my chest on TV this morning wasn't my finest moment!' Spud joked.

He said he had a quick and friendly chat with Preston boss Alex Neil, who he knew from when he was at Norwich.
