It sounds like science fiction, but an 'invisible cover' is being used at a Norwich swimming pool to stop energy from being wasted.

Norwich City Council and Leisure Connection have been working together on an energy audit for the Riverside Leisure Centre, and are using cutting edge technology to cover the pool when it is not being used.

A liquid based cover is always present in the water and when there is no movement in the pool, the molecules race to the top, making an invisible barrier which holds the heat in.

Council bosses say the new system reduces energy use by up to 30pc and ensures the water is kept at a constant temperature, which means early morning bathers get a nice warm pool, as well as slashing energy use.

Brian Morrey, executive member for sustainable city development, said: 'This is a first for Norfolk and I'm really pleased Norwich is leading the way once again in cutting carbon by introducing this great piece of kit.'

Phil Wright, Leisure Connection's contract manager, said: 'We're extremely proud to be leading the way with our local authority partners.

'Installing this new liquid pool cover is fantastic for our swimmers and for us pool operators alike. Covering the pool at night will ensure a constant temperature, reducing energy consumption and helping to make us green'

This project makes up part of the city council's long-term aim to reduce its carbon emissions by 30pc by 2012. On its own, the introduction of the new cover contributes one per cent of the target.
